In determining the severity of the burn, the extent, depth and burn zone of the burn are evaluated. The wound is cleaned and the burn depth is determined.
Burns; superficial burns and deep dermal burns. Superficial burns show little or no loss of dermis. First degree burns and superficial second degree burns heal without scarring on average within 3 weeks. In deep dermal burns, the dermis is affected completely or partially. They are classified as deep second, third and fourth degree burns according to dermis damage and involvement of deep tissues. Surgical treatment is usually required for such burns.
