Skin cancers are the most common type of cancer, especially in men. There is no healthy statistical data about the incidence of skin cancers in our country.

The volume is composed of 3 layers.

  • Epidermis
  • Dermis
  • Subcutis

The epidermis is the top layer of the skin. Protects the body from external factors. Prevents water, electrolyte and heat loss. Just above the middle dermis layer is a series of basal cells, above which are squamous cells, also called thorny cells, and on the surface, between the granulated cells, which are called melanocytes. Melanin pigment is synthesized from melanocytes. This pigment, which passes through other epidermis cells, allows the skin to reach its normal color.

The dermis is located below the epidermis. Sweat and sebaceous glands, veins, hair follicles, nerves are on this floor. Subcutis is subcutaneous adipose tissue. Skin cancers can be found in any part of the body, as well as 80 percent of the head and neck region. The sun-exposed parts of the human body are more candidates for skin cancers.

What are Skin Cancer Types?

  • Basal Cell Cancer (BCC) caused by basal cells in the epidermis
  • Squamous Cell Cancer (SCC) from squamous cells
  • Malignant Melanoma (MM) caused by melanin cells

BCC; is the most common skin cancer. It’s slow. Rarely spreads to other regions. If left untreated, it may proceed under the skin and jump to bones and other tissues. The most dangerous ones in this respect are those around the eyes. Rarely, BCC can threaten human life.

SCC; Another common type of skin cancer. Lips, face and ears are common. In some cases, the lymph nodes may also spread to the internal organs. SCC becomes life-threatening if left untreated.

Malignant melanomas, the third type of skin cancer, are less common. However, the incidence is increasing especially in sunny areas. It is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. However, if diagnosed early, there is a chance that it can be fully treated. Delay in diagnosis and treatment is often fatal.
